got restless leg syndrome?
(Warning – quite long blog ahead.)
Have you got restless leg syndrome (RLS) like I have? We are not alone – my favourite author, Vladimir Nabokov suffered too. It is thought that 5% of the population (I suppose we are talking Western countries here) suffers also.
For those not familiar with this insidious and disturbing condition, restless leg syndrome is described so:
“The sensations are unusual and unlike other common sensations, and those with RLS have a hard time describing them. People use words such as: uncomfortable, “antsy”, electrical, creeping, painful, itching, pins and needles, pulling, creepy-crawly, ants inside the legs, numbness, and many others. The sensation and the urge can occur in any body part; the most cited location is legs, followed by arms. Some people have little or no sensation, yet still have a strong urge to move.” (Wikipedia, but no citation given; but it describes what I suffer.)
Well, last night, I had had to get up (as always) soon after going to bed, due to an excess of twitching and restlessness, and was pecking away - browsing the Internet in a desultory way – when I came across wonderful information about the condition.
I found Restless Leg Syndrome Australia’s Web site. This is a great site and you can get a pile of information about this tedious twitching:
If you have or think you have restless leg syndrome, please visit the site – there is so much of interest there and, for a change, some real information that is so helpful.
If I have understood things correctly, the opinion is now growing that RLS is caused by a lack of iron so that some node or function area of the brain goes a bit haywire. So treatment with iron supplements are recommended – but please do not rush off and throw iron down your throat – drugs taken to manage psychiatric conditions are thought to have a hand in this also.
But – a simple leg-stretching routine before going to bed is recommended and that is what I am going to start doing. Here’s a link to a great page that summarises the “facts” (as much as anything is a fact in the human body). And here’s a copy of the exercise diagram:

Here’s an abstract from that sheet (thanks to Professor John Murtagh and Australian Doctor magazine):
“Self-help
You may have found that something works
for you …
- Avoid any substances or factors that you
know or suspect affect you.- Use activities that can reduce symptoms,
for example, a modest amount of walking
before bedtime, massage or prescribed exercises
(see figure). NB: getting out of bed
and going for a walk or run does not seem
to help.- Good sleep hygiene, namely, regular sleeping
hours, gradual relaxation at bedtime,
avoidance of non-sleep activities in bed, eg,
reading, eating.- Diet. Follow a very healthy diet. Avoid caffeine
drinks, smoking and alcohol.- Try keeping the legs cooler than the body
for sleeping.- Exercises. A popular treatment is gentle
stretching of the legs, particularly of the
hamstring and calf muscles for at least five
minutes before retiring. This can be done by
using a wide crepe bandage, scarf or other
length of material around the foot to stretch
and then relax the legs (as in figure [above]).”
I am going to try this stretching. Good luck! Let me know how you get on.

Jesus Christ!!
I never thought this was a “medical condition/syndrome”. I have it since childhood and sometimes i just wanna get up from bed and start stretching, no matter how tired i am.
I’ve noticed that putting my legs outside the duvet and keep them cooler, helps sometimes…

Well, everything is a medical condition/syndrome these days, it seems! I never thought it was either until when I had to get up yet again the other night I thought I would poke around and I found that Web site. I tried stretching a bit before going to bed last night, I think it helped a little … will keep trying it.
Thanks for your comment. Best wishes …

RLS sure is a real condition. I have had it since I broke my back
at 14 yrs ols. that was a lot of years ago! Good blog, and yes, the OZ web site is a great one. I love it and always tell my online support groups that I moderate about it. It is no nonsense web site, without the BS. Now, how to get all those bogus ads for for bogus RLS “cures” off the internet. I have either tried them all, or know people who have. It is all sketchy at best. If I found the cure for RLS, and I don’t believe their is only one, I would be shouting it from the roof tops, not charging 29.99 for an ebook that tells RLSer’s not to eat salt- an example of one.
Anyway, I am also the head of the RLS Task Force, a fledgling group of people devoted to getting erroneous info about RLS off the web.
We have had some success so far, but are not really organized enough yet. We have had some victories, though.
Your blog came up in a search,, so I thought I would check it out. Good job!
Donna
Thanks for that and also for dropping in. If there is anything I can do in your efforts, please let me know.
RLS cures = snake oil as far as I am concerned.
Best wishes
Adam
Hi Adam — I had RLS for some years, and
then it just went away of its own accord.
Like my plantar fascitis — two conditions
that visit me occasionally. I never know
what brings them on or what runs them off.
I hope your rls runs off with mine, and they
have such a good time on the loose that they
never come back again.
Helen
Helen,
It just went away? How lng has it been away, and is there anything you can remember that would have been different that you were doing?
How long has it been since you felt any RLS? do you mind if I ask your age? did you start iron supplements, or magnesium, or anything you can recall? We always keep journals, because we cannot always rely on our memories. I highly recommened this to all my members in all my support groups. A foggy brain cannot remember everything. LOL
Yes, Adam, pure snake oil. I have found that one can get the ads off of one’s pages if you fight long enough with yahoo. In fact I am getting ready to do that right now. Those ads are all over!
