shooting the photographers

While I went down to The Entrance (Central Coast of New South Wales) for a bit of a photoshoot at the weekend (19 July 2008), I found it crowded, seething with people – I had forgotten that was the last weekend of the school holidays.
But I turned this to advantage, as you learn to do as a photographer faced with adverse conditions, finding a bit of fun in shooting my fellow snappers.
Normally a shy, cautious breed, while the pelican feed was going on (3.00 pm every day) they become distracted and you can creep up on them and get some rare close-ups – enough so that, afterwards, you can examine every detail and get to know the breed and various subspecies in good detail.
Here’s a couple of examples:

This one, as you can see, is sporting a small point and shoot digital – a common species – adult, male, generally common, especially in tourist agencies.
This one – female, adolescent, possibly migratory, common, especially in tourist season:
